Since 2012, the “Forests on Blackboards” (FOB) program has been developing educational materials to inspire and enable school children to become involved in tackling local environmental problems. It engages teachers to develop manuals that provide knowledge and activities about local environmental issues to school children, whilst also adhering to the national curriculum. The FOB-online platform makes the manuals available as free downloads and enables evaluation of their use and impact.

The first phase of the FOB project produced award-winning teachers’ guides at both primary and secondary levels for Kanchanaburi Province (2012-15). In the second phase in Chiang Mai Province (North Thailand) (2016-19) a mid-secondary school manual was produced and the FOB-online self-earning platform was created. Most recently the concept was extended to Krabi Province (2020-ongoing), where a new teachers' manual has just been published. For more information on each locality, please below.

FOB-online is a web-based interactive learning tool, complementary to the manuals, which enables both pupils and teachers to track their progress.  It also creates a community of manual users, provides a means by which users can self-monitor their learning progress with online tests. Pupils can even claim and print  certificate in recognition of their new found skills and knowledge. The web iste will also continue to make the manuals available as PDF downloads, long after they are out of print.

The Chiang Mai teachers’ manual (Thai version) published under the FoB project was acknowledged with a Green Globe Institute – Writing award, which will be presented in Bangkok in June 2023.

In 2022, FORRU-CMU has been continued promoting school program and back on our core of forest restoration project under "Young Forest Restorers", to provide skills and knowledge to secondary school children, to enable them to implement their own forest-ecosystem restoration projects, to sequester CO2 and satisfy their enthusiasm for direct action to address global climate change. Many tree-planting projects are carried out poorly, without regard to ecological principles. Therefore, the technical support, from this project, are based on the work of Chiang Mai University's Forest Restoration Research over >25 years, to ensure best results.
