Buku ini ditujukan untuk para peneliti dan supervisor mereka. Petunjuk teknis ini menjel-askan tentang bagaimana membentuk unit penelitian restorasi hutan (FORRU) dan melak-sanakan program penelitian untuk menentukan cara terbaik untuk mengembalikan ekosis-tem hutan tropis ke lahan-lahan gundul. Berdasarkan pengalaman selama 15 tahun men-jalankan FORRU di Universitas Chiang Mai (CMU), Thailand Utara, penulis menjelaskan secara rinci konsep fundamental restorasi hutan dan cara membuat dan menjalankan penelitian di lahan pembibitan pohon dan sistem plot percobaan lapangan. Teknik untuk studi fenologi, percobaan perkecambahan biji serta pemantauan daya tahan spesies pohon setelah penan-aman dan pemulihan keanekaragaman hayati juga dijelaskan secara rinci, termasuk peng-umpulan data, analisis dan interpretasi data. Pada bagian akhir buku ini dijelaskan secara komprehensif cara menggunakan hasil penelitian, melaksanakan program restorasi hutan yang efektif untuk konservasi keanekaragaman hayati dan perlindungan lingkungan.
