Restoring forest landscapes through assisted natural regeneration (ANR)

The first rule of forest restoration is to make maximum use of what's already on-site. Every naturally establishing tree is one less tree to plant—and tree planting is expensive. So, exploiting natural regeneration to the fullest saves money. This book describes the procedures of "assisted natural regeneration" (ANR), based on almost 20 years of FAO's experiences. The techniques have been applied to achieve various objectives cost-effectively. The manual was drafted by Patrick Dugan (Bagong Pagasa Foundation, the Philippines) and Stephen Elliott (Forest Restoration Research Unit [FORRU] Chiang Mai University) and was published and distributed as part of an FAO-funded regional project on promoting the application of ANR.
