ANURAK COMMUNITY LODGE – OIL PALM PLANTATION CONVERSION PROJECT
RE-CREATION OF LOWLAND EVERGREEN FOREST HABITAT FOR ECOTOURISM & BIRDWATCHING

Anurak Community Lodge is located on the edge of Khao Sok National Park in Thailand’s southern Surat Thani Province and also one of popular place for outdoor eco-friendly adventures. First contacted was at the end of May in 2016 to ask assistance with a project to “replace oil palms with the original vegetation” on a 2-rai plot within the boundary of the resort.

The objective to convert an oil-palm plantation into the climax forest type of the area (lowland evergreen forest) to provide forest habitat for birds and other wildlife, of interest to eco-tourists. A survey to assess initial site conditions was carried out for 2-year-old oil palm plantation with the trees originally spaced about 9 m apart, at an altitude of about 40 m above sea level, and close to natural forest in Khao Sok National Park (<100 m), which provides seed sources and a refuge for seed-dispersing animals that could support natural regeneration.

FORRU recommend a combination of accelerated natural regeneration and planting framework tree species for this site. Weeds should be removed and fertilizer applied around any natural regenerants on-site, and planting just a few framework tree species rapidly catalyses biodiversity recovery.
