Dr. Stephen Elliott

Steve is one of the co-founders of FORRU and has been lecturing ecology and conservation at the Chiang Mai University since 1986. He co-ordinates and manages FORRU's research and education programs. FORRU was initially set up as a research unit to encourage wildlife back into Thailand's forests.

Dr. Vilaiwan Anusarnsunthorn

Vilaiwan was director at FORRU until she retired from her role at Chiang Mai University as an associate professor. She co-founded FORRU with Steve in 1994. She was attracted to the idea of FORRU as it was a way to begin restoring the forests of Thailand. She is also co-author of the book "Forest Trees of Northern Thailand".

Sutthathorn is a co-director of FORRU, collaborating with Steve to co-ordinate the education department. She completed her BSc and MSc at Chiang Mai University before joining FORRU at the beginning of 2002. She is also interested in forest restoration and FORRU gives her a way to work on both subjects.

Maxwell is a botanical consultant and curator of the Herbarium at Chiang Mai University. He carries out taxonomic surveys and provides botanical assistance to FORRU staff and university students. Educated in Singapore, he moved to Thailand in January, 1969 from the USA. He moved to Chiang Mai in July 1987. He says he liked the initial idea of FORRU as an opportunity to gain competent input and to understand forest conservation.

Cherdsak Kuarak

Cherdsak is a researcher and manages FORRU's forest nursery at Doi Suthep National Park Headquarters. His responsibilities at the nursery include seed collection from local sources to provide tree seedlings for use in FORRU's reforestation program. Cherdsak joined the FORRU team in 1997 after completing a BSc and MSc at Chiang Mai University. He is currently conducting a PhD on fig and wasp relationships in Doi Suthep National Park, and will be travelling to France for to continue his research in 2009.

Khwankhao Sinhaseni

Khwankhao Sinhaseni is FORRU's chief field researcher. She has been working with FORRU-CMU since August 2007, when she completed her masters thesis “Establishment of Natural Tree Seedling in Forest Restoration Trials” with FORRU. At present, she is responsible for the maintenance of FORRU-CMU’s planted plots at Ban Mae Sa Mai (to demonstrate evergreen forest restoration) and Huay Tueng Tao reservoir (to demonstrate deciduous forest restoration).

Tonglao Srithong

Thonglao has been an assistant researcher at FORRU's forest nursery since 1995. She carries out all tasks in the nursery from seed collection to planting. She also assists the field researchers with jobs such as tree phenology testing and seedling mortality surveys. She enjoys working at FORRU as she sees the work as being beneficial for the forests and people of Thailand.

Somkit Khunkota

Somkit has been an assistant researcher at FORRU's forest nursery since the end of 2002. She carries out all tasks in the nursery from seed collection to planting. She also assists the field researchers with jobs such as tree phenology testing and seedling mortality surveys. She enjoys working at FORRU as she believes that knowledge can be gained from the work carried out.

Ban Mae Sa Mae Nursery Manager

Khun Neang

His main duties are seed collection, germination, potting and nursery care before the planting season. Neang also participates in tree planting, after care, educational events and workshops up in the village of Ban Mae Sa Mai. Neang feels that working with FORRU to bring back the forests above his village is more than just a way to earn some money; he knows that the forest is important for their local water supply and that the image of the village can be improved through strong guardianship over the forests here.
